Bret Harte Elementary School and the Vanir Foundation have partnered to provide programs in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM). Last year, the foundation provided funding for an after-school hands-on program led by Vanir Ambassador Jordi Rodriguez. Engineering is Elementary (EIE) was open to 3rd and 4th graders to learn about different engineering concepts in a fun atmosphere. One of those students is Gloria Ruelas. She participated in the program which helped develop her love for science and engineering. During the Vanir Foundation’s “Pathway to Success” fundraiser on October 24th, Gloria shared her experience in EIE. She discussed how she enjoyed learning by making things with her hands and said the program led her to want to become an engineer when she grows up. Bret Harte Principal, Lorena Carrillo credits the Vanir Foundation’s introduction of programs like EIE, to the school’s desire to become a “Project Lead the Way” school where STEAM is the focus. Now more students can take advantage of these programs and develop their love for science-focused careers too!
